How To Care For Color-Treated Hair

By | May 31st, 2019

Every season, new color trends debut allowing stylists to get creative behind the chair! There is a constant influx of clients looking to try on new shades and styles. The constant change and new color ideas are great for business! This season, as we all prepare for warmer months, shades will get lighter and brighter. To get the inside scoop, we chatted with Keune North America Advanced Academy Trainer Dallan Flint about color trends and how to care for color-treated hair!

The top trends to come

Based on what we’ve seen at fashion week and through beauty movements, Dallan predicts we’ll be seeing more subtle colors this season. Most clients opt to go lighter for spring and summer. This season, fantasy shades will be taking on this movement as well. “For fashion colors – dusty tones of lavender and peach are the perfect pick for the sweet and sassy. While deep jewel tones of blues and violet-reds for a sexy, eye-catching look. As summer leads into fall deep, rich stop you in your track hypnotizing copper will be supreme!”

To create these effortless shades, Dallan is actually working on a new blonding technique specifically for these summer shades. Be sure to follow along on social media to see the latest techniques and color trends!

Achieving the perfect placement

The latest color release from Keune – Ultimate Blonde Freedom Blonde – is one of the top ways to achieve the perfect placement for summer. With 7 levels of lift and a formula specifically for open-air techniques, getting correct placement is easy. Now you’ll just have to help clients decide on tone! If you’re looking for a high-lift option, Ultimate Blonde Lifting Creams are the way to go. As an alternative Dallan explains,

“My team and I are obsessed with the Ultimate Blonde 3000 series. We’ve been using it as a color remover and are getting stellar results, cutting out a lot of grunt work.”

How to prep clients for changes to their hair

If your client wants a dramatic change that requires lightening, you should always do a strand test. You never know what’s hiding underneath the surface. Dallan adds, “It’s important to be very transparent, educate and set realistic expectations. Let them know what it takes to get to their end goal with time, money and aftercare.”

Once hair color, choice of product and placement have been determined, you’ll want to send your clients home with the proper home-care routine!

Aftercare Routine

As Dallan notes, almost all hair color appointments involve a lightening process, which is why he always recommends Keune Care for aftercare.

Color Brillianz “For client’s that have rich shades or fashion tones, Color Brillianz will increase longevity while keeping color looking luminous.”

Silver SaviorWhen it comes to blondes, Color Brillianz is a great choice, however, Silver Savior might be a better choice for them – “especially if they are looking for a cool and ashy finish” adds Dallan.

Vital Nutrition When client’s hair needs a little extra TLC, “This formula intensely nourishes the hair and restores moisture balance for smooth, soft, shiny hair.”

Satin Oil Whether hair is color treated or simply requires extra help to revamp its texture, “Satin Oil will take hair from frazzled tresses to luscious bouncy healthy locks of hair.”

Not sure which to pick? Sometimes having a rotation of formulas may be just what the stylist ordered! Dallan says, “My wife has three different shampoos and conditioners at all times and rotates through them. It all depends on your hair needs. We just went through a blonding process for her and it took 4 appointments totaling 26 hrs of work. After going through that blonding process her hair requires a lot of extra love, so she is currently rotating through Silver Savior, Vital Nutrition and Satin Oil.”

Dallan’s Pro-tips for color treated hair

Schedule a deep conditioning or bond builder treatment in between the longer appointments. Aftercare products are a must and you should always send clients home with a leave-in. Keune Care Keratin Smooth 2-Phase Spray is the perfect pick! This product is an instant conditioning treatment and detangling spray. It strengthens hair by replenishing keratin that has been broken down. As an added bonus, it also acts as a heat protectant up to 446 degrees.

Care Satin Oil Treatment is another great choice. It is a luxurious oil treatment that visibly improves hair giving them a healthy, smooth and shiny finish without weighing it down or looking greasy.

Lastly, Bond Fusion Phase 3 – this Bond Recharger builds and boosts the inner structure of the hair doubling the strength of hair resulting in 43% less breakage. Suggest they use this as a treatment in the shower before conditioning.
